Modesty: what is it, and why should I care?

This video talks about the issue of Christian Modesty.  The speaker's short talk is an excellent of persuasion.  Please watch the video and respond to the following questions.

1. What is modesty, and how do we identify it?

2. What can the history of the bikini teach us about how standards change over time? On what do people base their standards of modesty?

3. Who is responsible for keeping modesty: men or women?

4. What principles can we as post-modern Christians develop socially appropriate definitions of modesty?

  1. Modesty is often misjudged. It means that you save yourself for the right person and have self respect and as the woman said, later reveal your dignity in God's image and likeness. Bathing suits started out modest and now they reveal basically everything except for your mother's maiden name. Different people view modesty is different ways. Women should be extremely modest but these days so should men. Now, we can read the bible to understand what modesty is.

  2. Modesty is dignity and just like she said its not about hiding instead its about revealing your dignity. Culture seems to be a major aspect in everything we think and do. In the last discussion culture played a major role and I believe the same goes for this. I think people base their standards of modesty based on what they see being accepted in the world today.I think men and women are both responsible. Men shouldn't show women that they accept that kind of behavior and women shouldn't act on that behavior. We can take a look at people like this. You can honestly see that she has put much more work into figuring out what modesty is and I feel that people like that should be listened to and trusted.

  3. Modesty is when you cover yourself and show self esteem. We identify it by women dressing for occasions. Bathing suits used to expose less and girls would have more respect for themselves and guys would want to get to know them first but now girls don't care because society put that in their brain. You are responsible for modesty. As Christians, we can encourage our young people to be more modest and train the toddlers.

  4. In my opinion modesty is where we don't over expose our skin and we are like respectful to ourselves how we dress. Modesty is also when women don't show cleavage or having a mid drift. In the Bible it states in (1 Timothy 2:9-10)
"Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works." Men and women these days go for the looks they don't go for what that person is really like, the just go for the looks. I don't think we should be as modest as they were back then but I think we can cover more skin then what we do. It's not just bathing suits, shorts and shirts have become an issue as well with all these low cut shirts and booty shorts. Men and women are both responsible for keeping things modest. The women play a bigger role to keep things modest but men still play a small role in keeping things modest too! I think this society we live in makes it hard for kids through even young adults to dress modest only because if you don't dress modest your not "cool" enough. If your "friends" don't like you because you dress modest they are obviously not you're friends. Let me just say times have changed so much, that it's really hard to find one piece bathing suits anymore only because it's become such a popularity to have the perfect bikini, or the two piece that covers your stomach. Like the women said in the video "less is more" if we followed these rules when people designed clothes maybe we would live in a half decent world. Just remember MODEST IS HOTTEST! :)

  5. To me modesty is about dressing and acting in a way that brings glory to God. Swim suits started modest and they have become less and less modest. This shows that over the time society has cared less and less about what young, and older woman wear and they have encouraged it. People have different opinions on what is modest or not. It depends on what they have learned since birth and what they are influenced by what they have seen in the world. I think that both men and woman have responsibility for being modest. Men shouldn't give woman certain expectations on what to wear and also not to encourage it, and woman shouldn't be influenced so easily by what is in style. As Christians we should influence modesty to not only young people but also older people.

  6. Modesty is technically a behavior and attitude about the way we dress. Women were very modest back then. Covered their body all over and as new ideas sprang it changed drastically. Everyone wants to on the top with fashion and modesty today is all about how much you show. Men and Women are both responsible for being modest. Modesty should be a way of expressing yourself but not your body. It has to be your inner beauty. If that shines well then the rest will follow.

  7. To me modesty is not over exposing your body parts, representing purity, and respecting ourselves and others. Back then women wore much more covered bathing suits than we do now, bikinis didn't even exist! It was so scandalous to wear a bikini back then that you could get kicked out of the beach or pool. These days we are showing much more skin than we should. Today the media and culture encourage us to look in a certain way, and influence women around the world that to be beautiful you should wear less and less. I think that both men and women should represent modesty. Men shouldn't wear something to try to impress women, and women shouldn't wear something to impress men. Being modest does not mean you are old-fashioned or lame, it shows others that you have self-respect for yourself and others, and that you are happy with the way you are. As Christians, when we decide what to wear, we should ask ourselves, would it please God?

  8. I think this is something that only matters to some women and girls. While with guys it only affects and/or care about how women are dressed when it comes to bikinis.
