Is there such a thing as historical guilt? What responsibilities do we hold in dealing with the mistakes of the past?  How long does this last?  What do you think should be done in this situation?

  1. Is there a such thing as historical guilt? In my opinion I think there is because we as American s always have guilt so why wouldn't they have guilt. What responsibility's do we hold with dealing with the past is of course feeling like it's your fault and have that being of was that my fault? This last until you forgive yourself! Sometimes we blame ourselves but it's not always our fault so with history things I'm sure people say it's there fault. I think in the situation we should forgive each other instead of going against the other people.

  2. I think there is such thing as historical guilt. Its very sad that a lot of Americans have to feel that way. People take things really hard because of what their ancestors or just the people before them did. Some of that stuff such as slavery is over with so I think we should move on and forgive and forget. I dont mean forget it like it never happened, its okay to reflect back on the past to remember how things happened and why things are the way they are but we shouldnt look back at it and look down on others..

  3. yes
i think there is such a thing. Whether or not we did it our selves. As an american human being it would be natural to feel for those Natives that lost everything while we were gaining all that they were losing. So yes there is such a thing as historical guilt.

  4. yes there is such a thing as historical guilt. (depending on the person) each of us have different levels of it. for me, ii hate seeing terrible things happen to a person because it makes me think "what if that were me" . There is no way to get rid of the guilt. it's our nature, it's how we were taught. we can cope by focusing on how to make the world better, do whatever we can so that history wont repeat itself. This guilt is also a good thing, it helps us realize how great our lives are compared to the past, how far some of us have come, we have food, clothes, shelter, electronics, medicine that keeps us alive and healthy. We shouldn't see the things that happened in the past as horrible, we should use it as a lesson to help us realize the good and help spread that to make the world a better place.

  5. not really, it depends on the person. when we all see this happening yeah we feel bad but it does mean its our fault. we have to make a diffrence in doing so. just like aaron huey does a great job explaining his point of view. its a even 50/50 for both sides feeling guilty.its going to last a life time until some one says its enough. we need to learn from the past help and move on from, the mistakes.

  6. I think it means that you want to take away or recreate it so it woudn't happen again. As Ted was saying he was sorry for the Native Americans for what they have been through when we came over and killed millions of them. He wanted to renew and let us see what we hav done to them all because we wanted money the United States and Spanish wanted land and gold. We should feel sorry for them for what they went through.

  7. I think that there is a such thing as historical guilt. If your grandparents,great-grandparents or someone prior to your existence do something thjat is wrong for a reason, it is understandable. but if youve acheived your goal and keep mistreating or abusing whomever the victim is, it is wrong. And if you know that it is you know historical guilt, and if you carry the tradition it is even worse and then the trend would continue until someone stepped up and stopped it

  8. I THINK THAT THERE IS HISTOICAL GUILT BECAUSE THE DECENDANCE OF THE PEOPLE WHO TOOK THE NATIVE AMERICANS LANDS ARE SORRY THAT THEIR ANCESTERS DID THAT TO THEM AND THEY WOULD TRY TO HELP THOSE PEOPLE THE BEST THEY CAN LIKE HELPING THEM GET BACK THE LAND THAT WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM THEM. AND THAT IS WHY I THINK THERE IS HISTORICAL GUILT.

  9. Not really, it all just depends on who the person is. We dont hold any responsibility to the mistakes that happened in the past but it still doesnt mean that we cant try and change the mistakes that were made so history doesnt repeat itself. Guilt doesnt ever go away, it just a natural instinct. We need to just learn from our mistakes in the past and try to move on.

  10. We don't have any control over our past. What has happened has happened, and we can't change the pass. If you regret something that you didn't do, then you need to check your mental state.

  11. You should only learn from past mistakes, not feel gulty about something you didn't do.
