Hammurabi's Code

Hammurabi's Code

Check out one of the earliest known documents on earth.  Pick a few laws that stand out to you and comment on them.  Do you think these laws are fair? Just? Ethical?  On what are they founded?

  1. Code 147 "If she have not borne him children, then her mistress may sell her for money."Resources- The Avalon Project. I think this is very rude for Women. The laws I read they were not very fair and aren't very nice. Somewhat ethical, but not really not. I personally do NOT like these laws.

  2. # 279 "If any one male or female slave and a third party claim it the seller is liable for the claim." I think that this one is kinda weird because three people could just make up something that is not true and it would be taken as the truth. I thought that many of these where really messed up, but some of them made some sense.

  3. Hammurabi was one strict person! I personally think that some of this laws are a bit too harsh, but at the same time we 'gotta realize that there hadn't really been laws like this before, therefore the guy had to be strict so people would take them seriously. I thinks this laws really specify how Hammurabi wanted people to react. I guess some of these rules make sense and some don't.

  4. Did Hammurabi have strict / mean parents?? He was incredibly strict. Almost all of the laws ended with "death". I suppose he was trying to keep the crime rate down. The law i didn't really see the point of was #282. If a slave say to his master: "You are not my master," if they convict him his master shall cut off his ear. That isn't really necessary . I guess they lived in a pretty safe place because of all these laws! I still think the law is to harsh

  5. #202 "If any one strike the body of a man higher in rank than he, he shall receive sixty blows with an ox-whip in public." I think that would realy hurt and i dont think its fair must be a verry nice town but if u didnt obey one of there many rules its harsh. i would realy want to live there.hammurabi is realy realy strict

  6. Wow... That's harsh!!! 157. "If any one be guilty of incest with his mother after his father, both shall be burned." sure, what the person did is obviously wrong but the thought of burning someone scares me and is really cruel. A lot of those rules are wicked and unreasonable!

  7. rule 205: If the slave of a freed man strike the body of a freed man, his ear shall be cut off.

that's pretty harsh, who deserves to have their ear cut off ?? but ii understand Hammurabi , he wanted to keep people safe, the way he thought was safe, some of the punishments are unreasonable and he should have thought it out a little more in my opinion but , ii guess with safety there comes consequences

  8. #195: if a son strike his father, his hands shall be hewn off

I think thats pretty over the top for a punishment. Nobody deserves their hands to be cut off. I mean yea he deserves to be punished for hitting his father but not like that. I think a lot of these ruels are unreasonable and cruel.
